Chapter Five

Rowan opened the front door and nearly ran headlong into three women standing on the front porch. Two of them shrieked and one of them jumped back to avoid being hit. Rowan grabbed the door to remain upright. She needed to talk to Maeve and this interruption was exactly what she didn’t need.

“Oh my heavens. I almost had the vapors.” The sugary sweet voice came from her right, from the woman who had the foresight to move back out of the way.

Rowan turned to find a perfect little blonde wearing an exquisite robin’s egg blue dress with a matching hat. Her tiny hands were covered with white lace gloves, which were currently clutching a basket. She smiled and the blinding beauty stunned Rowan.

“Why, Rowan Murphy, as I live and breathe. There you are!” She patted Rowan’s hand as it clutched the door. “It’s been so long since we’ve seen you.”

Rowan recovered her wits. “Yes, so long.” She did a quick scan of their thoughts.

She is still so strange. I wish Catherine hadn’t made me come.

Edwina and Marg are such ninnies. Why do they have to act like that?

I want to go home. The buggy ride out here was terrible.

In a blink, she realized who they were. She also saved herself the embarrassment of not recognizing them.

Catherine, Edwina and Margaret. The three princesses of the apocalypse.

“You are so tall.” Edwina blinked up at her, barely five feet herself. She looked like a little owl in her brown dress, brown hat, brown hair and brown eyes. Apparently age had not dimmed her proclivity to blurt.

“Thank you, Edwina. I like being tall. I can see quite a lot from up here.” Rowan glanced at the three of them, noting the sharp gleam in Catherine’s gaze. Always the leader of the pack, the blonde had not changed her role. “What brings you three out here to the Triad?”

I must secure the invitation. I must.

“Why we heard you were having your twenty-first birthday party and knew we had to come by to find out what we could do to help.” Catherine smiled again, those white teeth looking sharper.

Rowan should have told them to go home, to get off her property. It would have been nicer than how they used to treat the Murphy girls. The three princesses were the main reason Rowan stopped attending school in town. Then after Maeve accidently burned the school down, well, the princesses took it upon themselves to call Rowan and her sisters “witches” each time she saw them.

Now Catherine stood at her front door, intent on securing an invitation to a birthday party for the very girls she verbally tortured. Rowan definitely should have kicked them out but something stopped her.

Why did Catherine want to come? What compelled her to want an invitation so badly she would stoop to paying a social call on the Murphys?

Just invite us to the party. Who else would come anyway?

Rowan focused on Catherine’s thoughts but they revealed nothing as to the why. That meant Rowan had to invite them to discover the reason.
